YuanLey YS25-0801 Management
This is an unmanaged switch. We could not find a management interface. For a switch in this price range, perhaps that is exactly what folks want.
YuanLey YS25-0801 Performance
In terms of performance, this seems to be a decent, but not top-tier performer.
This switch performed similarly to the other 8+1 Realtek switches we have reviewed in the past.
YuanLey YS25-0801 Power Consumption
This YuanLey comes with a small 12V 1A power adapter, so we know this is going to be a low-power device.
At idle, we got around 2.7W which is slightly higher than the Davuaz.
With a single 2.5GbE port plugged in, we added 0.7W for 3.0W total which is the same as the Davuaz.
We used a 10Gbase-T SFP+ pluggable to add a good amount of power consumption in a SFP+ port and we got 3.7W also the same as the Davuaz version.
Overall the power consumption of the YuanLey and the Davuaz units are higher than the other PCB version used by companies like Sodola.
As with the Davuaz, we tried powering this over PoE using a splitter, and it worked. While this does not have PoE-in, a cheap splitter got us the power we needed to the switch just given it is such a low-power device. Perhaps that is not the best idea, but it worked.
Final Words
One way to look a this switch is as something far from fancy. That can either be a good thing or a bad thing depending on your outlook. On the good side, it is cheap. Although the power consumption can be maybe 0.5-1W higher than other units, if you save $10-20 on the initial purchase price that may be worth it for folks with inexpensive power. On the negative side, it does not have all of the warranty and regulatory markings one might want.
Still, this is a low-cost and ultimately low-power fanless 2.5GbE switch. If you have optical networking in a building and just need a 2.5GbE switch with a lot of uplink bandwidth, this can work. Conversely, if you have a smaller network need this might be a perfect switch for an entire home or office.
We are still a few quarters from the single switch solutions like theĀ MaxLinear MxL86282 coming to market, and probably a few after that for those switches to come down in pricing to meet Realtek (if they ever do.) In the meantime, this dual-chip solution is about as good as it gets.
