A few weeks ago we took a quick look at the Micron 32GB DDR5-5600 ECC UDIMM Kit. We saw in the comments that folks recommended the V-Color 96GB kit. The kit came with two 48GB ECC UDIMMs for 96GB total. We paid $399 for the two DIMM kit. This is more than many non-ECC UDIMMs, but since the 32GB Micron ECC UDIMMs are $220 each, this V-Color kit offers more capacity at a lower cost.

When the box arrived, we saw a fairly standard-looking V-Color box with the 96GB and 48GB x2 telling us what is inside.

The rear gives us more specs with the DDR5-5600 and PC5-44800 markings, CL46-45-45-90 markings, and the fact that these are ECC UDIMMs.

On the rear we can see the SK hynix DIMM packages. You can see that the packages are installed in sets of five since these are ECC modules.

Here are two installed in the Gigabyte R113-C10 server.

We used these in a recent video where we put them in the most popular server barebones on Newegg right now.

The main advantage of these is being able to run them in the lower-cost servers and workstations that can use ECC UDIMMs but not ECC RDIMMs. In the DDR5 generation, UDIMMs and RDIMMs are keyed differently, so you have to use one or the other in platforms.

For many of the newer servers, getting 192GB where previous generations only had up to 128GB support is a big deal. Alternatively, getting 96GB of capacity while only using two DIMMs and getting full performance is preferable as we showed in Why One DIMM Per Channel or 1DPC Can Be Great for AMD EPYC 4004. That popular AMD EPYC 4464P is a 12 core processor which divides nicely into 48GB DIMMs.

Final Words

The main reason to get this kit over others is the price. At $399 it is far from cheap, but compared to the 32GB Micron DIMMs that have less capacity at higher cost, this feels like a much better option. We purchased some lower-cost kits, but those feel like a quality drop compared to these modules. We have been using the V-Color DDR5-7200 192GB ECC Kit for AMD Ryzen Threadripper and the V-Color 256GB 8x 32GB DDR5-6400 RDIMM Kit in workstation platforms, and that gave us confidence to buy the ECC UDIMM kit here. Maybe the best reasons to use these kits are simply that they work and they are less expensive than some alternatives.
