The switch also has dual firmware images like higher-end switches. TRENDnet also updates firmware on its website. A firmware update was released in July 2024 just after we finished testing this switch.

Next, let us get to the performance.

TRENDnet TL2-F7120 Performance

Here is the throughput chart for the switch.

Overall, we got fairly good throughput and decent consistency even when hammering the switch.

TRENDnet TL2-F7120 Power Consumption

We would expect this switch to sip power just because it is a lower port count SFP+ switch.

At idle, we saw 9.0W which is higher than many of the lower-end 2.5GbE/ 10GbE switches we test but also lower than many of the MikroTik switches. Adding a SFP+ to 10Gbase-T adapter, one of the more power-hungry pluggables added 2W for 11W.

Final Words

Reviewing this switch it certainly felt like a step below the MikroTik switches that we have reviewed previously (and have two reviews in progress right now.) At the same time, compared to the ultra-low-cost switches we have found on AliExpress and Amazon, this feels like a notable jump in quality along with the jump in price.

Still, for a half-width switch that is relatively inexpensive, especially when on sale, it is hard not to appreciate the TRENDnet TL2-FL120.
