Synology DS1618+ is a 6-bay desktop NAS system that is a midway product between the company’s traditional 4-bay and 8-bay units. Given the capacity points of hard drives these days, adding a 6-bay option helps companies and managed service providers tailor capacity and redundancy points for different locations.
Synology DS1618+ Overview
The Synology DS1618+ is powered by the Intel Atom C3538 quad-core CPU. This is Intel’s newest generation Atom codenamed “Denverton” which offers significantly more performance than the previous generation Atom C2000 series parts. It also upgrades the platform with more SATA III 6.0gbps ports, PCIe 3.0 ports, DDR4 support, and higher RAM capacities. All aid users in leveraging Synolgoy DSM’s great features.
Synology built the unit with four 1GbE ports via the Intel Atom C3538 SoC. One can add 10GbE via a PCIe add-in card. Another option is adding m.2 SSDs via a PCIe card as well. We wish that Synology decided to use a higher-end SoC with dual 10GbE and dual 1GbE. The unit ships with 4GB of DDR4 RAM in a single module, but can be expanded to 32GB via 2x 16GB DIMMs.

‘All aid users in leveraging Synolgoy DSM’s great features.’
indeed, with missing full disk encryption, vulnerable security of any encrypted folders (you steal the device you have all the data), questionable BTRFS and ancient RedHat Linux kernel…
really great, you have no other options, just go and buy it! All Synology devices has above fantastic features!
Can you run FreeNAS with ZFS on it?
