About 10 months ago I decided to enter the world of the Windows Home Server. My storage arrays had outstripped my Cosmos S's capacity, and running multiple controllers for all of the SAS drives as well as SATA storage became too much. My decision to build a WHS v. buy one was made due to sub-$100 Seagate 1.5TB 7200.11 drives...
Introduction For Small Business Servers and home servers, one thing becomes apparent, the need to use raid with large data sets. Raid 1 and software mirroring technologies like Windows Drive Extender are too cost ineffective for large storage arrays. For example, if one has 1 TB of storage need and uses one of these mirroring redundancy option, they need 1TB...

The current WHS is <2.5TB from being full, which means it will be full in 3-4 months. I just ordered more drives, a Norco RPC-4020 (20 drive bays), and an Asus P6T7 WS Supercomputer motherboard for the next build. Stay tuned!
Here's a quick update to the Patriot PS-100 32GB review including Raid 0 benchmarks with two drives. Also, for comparison (to a much higher-end setup) see: Two OCZ Vertex v1.5 Firmware Raid 0 Benchmarks Update 6 June 2010: New Patriot PS-100 32GB Firmware v3.000 benchmarks are up (single drive). Starting with CrystalDiskMark here is the Raid 0 versus the original: Improvements across...
A 32GB SSD drive for $60 after MiR sounded like a good idea, especially since that would be great for a Windows Home Server C: drive, so I purchased a Patriot PS-100 32GB. (It should be noted that I have not seen the price for $60 again in the following 3 months) 64MB of cache sounded better than a...
Updated the SSD Drive and Controller List with: OCZ m84 LSI and Indilinx controllers; Crucial M225 64GB, 128GB, 256GB drives
Just as a note to anyone running multiple large disks in Raid 6 for Windows Home Server. I was setting up new Raid 6 arrays on the WHS this weekend, controlled by an Adaptec 31605 and was greeted by a nice error message. WHS is limited to four volumes per physical drive using basic discs. A quick search of...
Updated the SSD Drive and Controller List with: G.Skill Falcon 64GB, 128GB, 256GB; G.Skill Titan 128GB, 256GB; Intel X25-M 80GB, 160GB; Intel X25-E 80GB, 160GB; Kingston SSDNow M-Series 80GB, 160GB
Updated the SSD Drive and Controller List with: OCZ m84, p84, Solid V2, and SuperTalent RaidDrive Series
SSD's are becoming more commonplace and are available from a multitude of vendors. Despite a high level of vendor diversity for the drives themselves, there are only a few SSD controller options available, and the vendors do not necessarily list which controller a given drive has. In an effort to simplify the research process, the following list will be...
