Today Marvell announced a big multi-year and multi-product win at AWS. This is great for the company as it pushes both interconnect as well as custom silicon solutions. This is also likely a competitive win against Broadcom and Astera Labs in many parts of the business.

Marvell Nabs a Big Multi-Year Multi-Product Win at AWS

Today’s announcement was notable since it was not just a custom silicon win, or an interconnect product win. Instead, there were multiple different solutions noted in the 5-year deal including:

“[C]ustom AI products, optical digital signal processors (DSPs), active electrical cable (AEC) DSPs, PCIe retimers, data center interconnect (DCI) optical modules and Ethernet switching silicon solutions.”

We covered some of the Marvell PCIe retimer products in Marvell Extending PCIe Gen6 Reach from 3.5 Inches to Meters. That space has been heating up with Astera Labs’ massive IPO from that technology. Since then, players like Broadcom and Marvell have stepped in. We now have at least one win for the Marvell PCIe retimer and other product lines.

The Marvell Ethernet switching silicon we wish was a little bit more specific. That could be management switches for lower-speed networking or the higher-end switching products like the Teralynx line that we took a look at in Inside a Marvell Teralynx 10 51.2T 64-port 800GbE Switch. It would be a much bigger deal if we hear this is a big Teralynx deal since Broadcom is generally the biggest in the space.

The optical modules and DSPs are also interesting since AWS uses many of those in its cloud infrastructure.

Final Words

The real question now is whether this is the announcement of big dollar wins at AWS or as a second source for these products. Usually, the custom silicon is more of a win on a per-accelerator or a series of accelerators basis. The other ones would be more interesting to hear details on. There is a big difference between being selected as the Ethernet silicon for environmental switching sensors and for east-west or north-south data fabric switches in a data center. AWS is usually quiet about its awards, so this is probably a decent size since Marvell was able to announce it.

Hopefully we will learn more in the next few weeks.
