Inspur EIS800S Fanless Edge Server Review

Inspur EIS800S Power Consumption

The power consumption of the Inspur EIS800S surprised us. As one can see, the unit shipped with an 84W external FSP power supply.

Power consumption on this was very good, sitting right around 8W at idle. We could push the system to just above 18W in the configuration shown without networking at 10GbE speeds. Adding SFP+ optics and the 10Gbase-T links added another ~10W of power. We also validated that these were able to cool optics for a period of 30 days passing ~7Gbps of traffic on average.

STH Server Spider: Inspur EIS800S

In the second half of 2018, we introduced the STH Server Spider as a quick reference to where a server system’s aptitude lies. Our goal is to start giving a quick visual depiction of the types of parameters that a server is targeted at.

This server is not designed to be the highest density per U that the STH Server Spider was designed to illustrate. Instead, the EIS800S is a system designed to be deployed in edge environments, and not in racks. Still, Inspur packs an impressive number of features into such a small package.

Final Words

This was just an interesting system to look at because we also looked at the model that has fans. A big part of the Inspur philosophy with these systems is to provide a standard platform that scales from fanless units to higher-density and expandability units that can be rack mounted. The EIS800S makes a lot of sense once one sees the EIS800E and understands that it is a common platform across architectures.

Overall, the Inspur EIS800S performed well for us and remained stable running the unit for weeks. Internally, the ability to have eMMC boot plus either M.2 storage or AI accelerators plus quad 10GbE options is very useful.

  1. Where can you even buy these from? Their website has no prices, if you search for “where to buy” it comes back with 503 Service Unavailable, Googling for the server model only shows the STH reviews, it seems like nowhere sells them? Or do they only ship to the US and if you’re elsewhere in the world you can’t buy them?

  2. These are not really consumer electronic products. You need to either contact the company directly for a quote or get in touch with a distributor. Price is usually not public and is based on the details of the order. Hope this helps.

  3. As reported in various tech news sites, Inspur is currently under review by the FTC to be restricted from US importation.
