NVIDIA launched three new “Super” consumer GPUs at CES 2024. The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 Super, RTX 4070 Ti Super, and RTX 4070 Super. These are no longer the big money maker for NVIDIA. Still, it is important that NVIDIA can keep its cards and CUDA in the systems that students and others have on their desktops as companies like Intel, AMD, and Apple push their AI PC solutions.
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 Super at CES 2024
First up, is the big one, the Geforce RTX 4080 Super. This is going to slot between the RTX 4080 and the RTX 4090 at $999.
The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 Ti Super gets a nice boost to 16GB of memory. Adding more memory to its cards helps folks run larger AI models locally so that is going to be a key feature going forward selling higher-end cards.
The GeForce RTX 4070 Super adds more cores at a $599 price point.
Overall, these are not high-end cards, but they also sell in higher volumes.
Final Words
NVIDIA has been doing mid-cycle refreshes for many generations. The NVIDIA RTX 4000 series has been out for some time, and so NVIDIA needs to keep gamers interested in its current generation. What we have already seen is that NVIDIA is allocating more silicon to its higher-cost professional cards like the NVIDIA L40S and NVIDIA RTX 6000 Ada Generation. As soon as NVIDIA has a new generation data-center GPU or even a professional GPU, those will sell out at high price tags. What we expect to see in this trend is that NVIDIA launches first with high-end, high-margin parts, then brings GPUs to gamers and non-professional series desktop users. Selling big Ada Lovelace GPUs as RTX 4090’s instead of L40S/ RTX 6000 GPUs is not maximizing profit for the company, so this will make business sense. On the other hand, in the mid-range, NVIDIA has a bit more room to introduce new cards.
I love the idea of a card selling for $999 MSRP slotting “between” cards that sell for $1200 and $1600 MSRP.
Because it means a price cut?
