While OCP is generally a place where we see many high-end systems, we saw something at the OCP Regional Summit 2023 in Prague that was distinctively edge. The EdgeCore ECS4125-10P is a 2.5GbE PoE++ switch with 10GbE as well. This is the type of switch we have wanted to see for some time, making it exciting.
EdgeCore ECS4125-10P 2.5GbE PoE++ Switch at OCP Regional Summit 2023 Prague
While Accton/ EdgeCore may be better known for its data center switches, the company is now branching out into the edge. That includes a number of WiFi 6 APs (no WiFi 6E shown at OCP.)
That new line of WiFi APs means that one needs a PoE switch to power and connect the APs. That is exactly where the EdgeCore ECS4125-10P comes in.
With the newer generation of access points able to achieve speeds of over 1Gbps, 2.5GbE networking becomes a better uplink port speed. Likewise, the new APs use more power than the typical PoE+ budget, so PoE++ is needed. That is why the eight 2.5GbE ports are PoE++.
For the uplink, there are two SFP+ 10GbE ports as well. That means there is enough uplink bandwidth to match the downstream 2.5GbE ports.
These are certainly the hardware specs that we have wanted to see for some time.
Final Words
The 8-port PoE++ with two 10GbE uplinks has been a form factor that needs to be more popular. Just powering modern WiFi 6/6E APs and providing the uplink bandwidth for WiFi means that PoE++ and 2.5GbE should be more popular. One of the major reasons we just did the Ultimate Cheap Fanless 2.5GbE Switch Mega Round-Up is to push more vendors to make exactly this form factor.
Stay tuned to the STH main site article as we have those first 15x 2.5GbE switches and another 7x that are already in the STH lab. We are trying to get 1-2 individual switch reviews done each week.
It was just funny that STH saw this switch at the hyper-scale focused OCP event.
Another switch, which I happen to own, is the QNAP QSW-M2116P-2T2S. With multiple 10G ports, along with plenty of 2.5G POE ports, it does a great job running WiFi 6 APs and has plenty of bandwidth for a 10G NAS and multiple 10G clients.
If only QNAP put enterprise class features in like 802.1x and PVID support they would make great home switches. I own the QSW-408-2c and it’s almost good enough
We would like to express our gratitude for taking the time to visit the STORDIS booth during the recent event in Prague. Your interest in our products and services is greatly appreciated. We are proud to offer the ECS4125-10P, the world’s first enterprise PoE network switch that supports Telecom Infra Project OpenLAN Switching (#OLS), and we are excited to share that you can efficiently manage this cutting-edge technology using the Edgecore ecCLOUD platform.
Thank you once again for your visit, and we look forward to assisting you with any networking needs you may have in the future. If you have any questions or require further information, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us
