MikroTik has an update to its new “cool” router. The new MikroTik RB5009UPr+S+IN takes the RB5009 platform and adds PoE In and Out across all of its ports for a truly unique box. As you will see, this is one that is very different from almost anything else we have seen in the space.

The RB5009UPr+S+IN has a model name almost as long as the chassis itself. Key ports are a 10GbE SFP+ port, a USB port, a 2.5GbE RJ45 port, and then seven more RJ45 1GbE ports. We really want to see a 2.5GbE switch from MikroTik.

The small router is based on the Marvell 88F7040 CPU and the Marvell 88E6393 switch chip. We really like that MikroTik is moving its line to Arm processors and Marvell silicon as it is a step up from what some of its previous generation products used. It also helps make the devices more capable over time.

The entire solution is fan-less. That keeps the unit quiet and able to be deployed in more locations. MikroTik did some work on the platform to ensure that it could be utilized in a fan-less chassis. Part of that was placing the switch chip and CPU on the opposite side of the PCB from the network ports.

Perhaps the biggest change now is the power situation. The RouterOS router can be powered via a 2-pin DC connector, a DC barrel jack, or PoE In on any of the RJ45 ports. It also has PoE out on the RJ45 ports. PoE out is limited to only 25W and a combined 130W. Still, that is great for this class of device.

With its small form factor, it is designed to be placed in a half rack and half height. MikroTik has brackets that allow four of these units to be fit into 1U.

While the company offers more powerful routers, the prospect of putting four of these in 1U and all passively cooled is very exciting for space constrained applications and labs.

Final Words

This is one of the more unique boxes we have seen in some time. MikroTik is known for making small edge networking boxes that have surprising features. Having PoE In and Out across the eight ports is really a different feature. The big question is how long these will take to ship and make it to market. Hopefully it is soon given that these are based on the existing RB5009 platform.

  1. I wish mikrotik did a cloud-router product with a mixture of ethernet and SFP+ (12eth/12sfp+ maybe?). mikrotik CCR lineup is getting outdated.

  2. I’d love a version of this one with 2.5GbE RJ45 replaced with something faster. Still, an amazing solution for thin clients with an edge server.

  3. @Motion2082 This isn’t even the same product segment as unmanaged switches though?

2.5 Gbe would be nice, but I would have actually preferred the 2.5Gbe port be dropped for an extra SFP+ port instead because my network is pretty much entirely SFP+ with 1Gbe mostly only for redundancy and APs.
