QCT Shows an Ice Lake D Outdoor Server and Sapphire Rapids at Intel Vision 2022

At Intel Vision 2022, QCT showed off a number of servers, three of which we wanted to quickly highlight since they were at the Intel Vision 2022 event. One machine was an update of something that we saw earlier this year so we wanted to cover this briefly.

QCT Shows of Ice Lake D Edge Server

At MWC 2022 a few months ago, Intel launched the Ice Lake D Era with the Xeon D-2700. When we were at that show, we saw an Intel Xeon D IP67 system, but this was not based on that new Ice Lake D.

At Intel Vision 2022, we got an update called the QCT QuantaEdge EGD33B-WT that you can see on its side here.

Since the event had limited space, it was not mounted on a pole, but that gave us a better vantage point for the fiber connections at the bottom of the unit.

This is exciting because we saw that the new outdoor DU server is using the Intel Xeon D-2700 series with up to a 118W TDP.

It is great to see Ice Lake-D getting more design wins. If you want to learn more about the new series, you can see this video or the article linked above.

There were two more items that we wanted to cover, and those are Sapphire Rapids servers.

QCT QuantaGrid Sapphire Rapids Servers

Something that we did not expect, and I was surprised to see when Patrick, our Editor-in-Chief, sent me the photos. That is a duo of 4th Generation Intel Xeon Scalable servers. The first was a 2U QuantaGrid D54Q-2U.

There was also a 1U system with E1.S SSDs on the front. This one is called the QuantaGrid D54X-1U.

These servers are for the Sapphire Rapids generation that will be launched in a few months. We saw Intel Sapphire Rapids at Intel Vision 2022.

Intel was showing off the new chips at the event, but I asked why we did not have any inside the systems photos like we normally do. Patrick said it was because the systems could only be shown with the lids closed so people cannot see inside of them. He somehow validated that they were indeed Sapphire Rapids servers. Even though we have seen at least three different models already on STH at events in 2021.

Final Words

New hardware is slowly rolling out. It was great to see the new systems at Intel Vision 2022 this year. Seeing a new Intel Xeon D-2700 outdoor servers was very neat. Of course, we expect the rest of the ecosystem to have its Sapphire Rapids servers ready later this year so expect a flurry of reviews as both Intel and AMD move to new platforms.
