In mid-April 2018, STH started a little project: the weekly STH Newsletter. You can see the first edition archived here. That was the week of our Supermicro X11SDV-16C-TP8F Review, the Another Atom Bomb Intel Atom E3800 Bay Trail VLI89 Bug piece, and our AMD EPYC 7451 Benchmarks and Review. Since then, every Saturday, the best of STH has come to subscriber’s inboxes. What started out as a suggestion from Timothy Prickett Morgan at The Next Platform, has turned into a weekly tradition now over a half year old. We have a had a small sign-up box on the STH main site, sometimes it gets posted to Twitter, but otherwise, we have not done much promotion. The newsletter has grown to the point that I wanted to share a bit about it.
What is in the STH Newsletter and how are features chosen?
You can check out our latest edition here for a flavor. The STH Newsletter has settled on a format where I write a short recap of the week. I take a minute or two to simply recap what noteworthy happened from Sunday to Saturday.
Then there are the top five stories from the week. This was intended to simply be driven by page views. That did not exactly work. An article published on Thursday or Friday could be popular but have fewer page views than a Sunday piece due to being published for less time. The other issue we had was that sometimes we had articles that were extremely popular that we did not anticipate would be so.
Instead, it turned into my top 5 picks from the week. Usually, if we do a CPU benchmark piece, cover a major industry launch, or do a product review, those will go into the newsletter. I then take a little bit of editorial liberty. This has worked for all but a single week, the week the Intel Xeon E-2100 was re-launched. For that, we had the HPE ProLiant DL20 Gen10 Review and Supermicro SYS-5019C-MR Review. The AMD Next Horizon event culminated in some AMD EPYC 2 Rome details. Intel Cascade Lake-AP was announced to pre-empt the news. We started the week with a BOXX APEXX T3 AMD Ryzen Threadripper Workstation Review. For a theory that we could get by on five items, we have only missed that target on one exceptional week.
Finally, I like to add a little preview of what is coming on STH the following week. Sometimes cannot hint at embargoed news, but usually, at the end of the newsletter, I try to add a few hints about big industry events and upcoming content on STH.
