Intel SATA SSD Needs Power to Function

Intel has a long history of x5xx SSDs. The latest generation is the Intel D3-S4510 SSD. This is another generation of the series that uses 3D TLC NAND to provide more capacity. With controller upgrades, Intel is still able to get a lot of performance from its TLC 3D NAND as we saw in our Intel DC P4510 Review Blowing the Doors off Previous Gen. That was an example of the PCIe / NVMe 4510 drive performing well with the NAND and a controller update. The Intel D3-S4510 is perhaps going to be one of the last in its line as the days of SATA SSDs are quickly waning.

Intel D3-S4510 in the SSD SKU Stack

We recently covered how Intel was changing its SSD naming for the first time in quite a while in our piece Intel Revamps Data Center SSD Naming Conventions. The hierarchy now looks like this:

New Intel Data Center SSD Naming Conventions
New Intel Data Center SSD Naming Conventions

As a “D3” drive, we expect this to be a legacy SATA device on the bottom half of the SKU stack. These days, SSDs are constrained by the SATA interface, and the SATA III interface has no roadmap past 6.0gbps so its days are numbered.

Intel D3-S4510 Key Specs

Here are the key specs of the Intel D3-S4510 SSD:

Capacity 2.5in – 240GB, 480GB, 960GB, 2TB (1.92TB), 4TB (3.84TB)
Performance 128KB Sequential Read/Write – up to 560/510 MB/s

4KB Random Read/Write – up to 97,000/36,000 IOPS

Reliability Designed for end-to-end data protection from silent data corruption, uncorrectable bit error rate < 1 sector per 1017 bits read
Power Active power up to 3.6W; Idle power up to 1.1W
Interface SATA 6Gb/s
Form Factor 2.5in x 7mm
Media Intel 3D NAND, TLC
Endurance Up to 2 DWPD
Warranty 5-year limited warranty

Final Words

At this point, we recommend NVMe SSDs. On the other hand, PCIe complexes are still limited in numbers of lanes and SATA is “free” for storage. That makes SATA drives popular for boot devices as an example. The Intel D3-S4510 SSD with Intel 3D NAND now offers more capacity for server SATA III connections.
