Quanta OS license levels for QuantaMesh switches

We are hard at work setting up the new colocation facility. Our Las Vegas, Nevada facility has 10Gb SFP+ and 40GbQSFP+ networking. Our Fremont, California facility has 10Gbase-T networking. Our Sunnyvale, California facility will be (much) larger than we have at either previous location. As a result, we are ramping up the networking side for this expansion with 10Gbase-T (48 ports), 10Gb SFP+ (50 ports) and 40Gb QSFP+ (12 ports) networking. We decided to answer some questions about Quanta QCT QuantaMesh switches in the process. As we did want some fairly advanced L3 capabilities, as we were going through our selection process, we were often looking at upgrading onboard software.

Here is a quick look at the license levels for Quanta switches. One can see that you do get quite a bit with the Common Layer 2 and General Layer 3 packages.

Moving up to the Advanced Layer 3 package adds some nice features like VXLAN, NVGRE and OpenFlow1.3. Cost wise, while traditional switch vendors can price their advanced software packs in the $1,000-$10,000 range on this class of switch, resellers can often get you the Advanced Layer 3 package for around $330, or about 1/3rd what a 1 year Cumulus Linux license costs.

We will have more on the Quanta QCT QuantaMesh switches soon. For the new Sunnyvale, California test lab we just purchased the following:

• QuantaMesh T3048-LY8
• QuantaMesh T3048-LY9
• QuantaMesh T1048-LY4A

Those should give us a decent set of switches to work with. For the two T3048 models we did also buy the Quanta advanced OS software package so we will get to utilize some of the higher-end features.
